Function: Transmit message to muscles
Motor neurone disease is a group of diseases which affect the motor neurons and usually occurs among adults.
The ratio of male to female is 1.8:1
Average age: 50-60
Unknown
Degenerative motor neurone
Viral infection
Inherited
Muscular atrophy
Stiff-muscles or numbess
Increased muscle tone
Convulsion
The respiratory muscles will be affected in serve cases, leading to difficulty in speech or swallowing, or even death
Motor Neurone Disease is classified into different types depending on the area affected:
Motor neuron disease with only lower motor neuron signs
Patients display progressive weakness that can be rapidly progressive or very slow
atrophic muscles are always noticed
absence of brisk reflexes
The prognosis is better than other type of motor neuron disease
Lower motor neuron deterioration
Difficulty swallowing, speaking, chewing and breathing
The prognosis is usually the worst among motor neuron disease
The most common form of motor neuron disease
Both the upper motor neurons and the lower motor neurons degenerate or die, ceasing to send messages to muscles
The muscles gradually weaken, waste away (atrophy), and twitch (fasciculations) . Eventually, the ability of the brain to start and control voluntary movement is lost
It is a rapidly progressive, invariably fatal neurological disease. Patient may die within 2 to 3 years
The patient cannot performed at least 3 activities of daily livings without assistance:
Bathing
Changing clothes
Toileting
Eating
Get off from bed or chair
No curing method
There are medications to decrease the extent of muscle atrophy, secretions or shortness of breath etc.
Instruments or tools to improve respiratory or speech problems
Physiotherapy
Occupational therapy
Speech therapy
