Cervical Cancer affects close to 500 women a year in Hong Kong. Most of the patients are women aged 40-60 years old.
However, there is an increasing trend of cervical cancer among young women in recent year. Women age of 25 also have the opportunities to suffer cervical cancer.

A virus called Human Papilloma virus(HPV) causes almost all cases of cervical cancer,
HPV affect the operation of normal cervical cell, enhancing the rate of cervical cancer
Over 100 types of HPV, 40 of them would infect the reproductive organs. Among them, about nearly half can cause cancer. Type 16 HPV and 18 HPV are the most common of these and repeat exposure to the HPV would lead to pre-cancerous abnormalities that will seriously increase the chances of cervical cancer.
Key factors
Apart from the infection of HPV, the following factors would also increase the chances of cervical cancer:
1. Sexually active in early age
2. Promiscuity
3. Family member had suffered cervical cancer
4. Smoking
5. Female suffering illness of immune system
6. Suffering venereal disease eg , genital warts & AIDS

Nowadays, two vaccines approved by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board would be available in Hong Kong. Both 2 vaccines could prevent infection from types 16 and 18 of the HPV.
Based on the supporting data, 70% of cervical cancer cases in Asia are induced by types 16 and 18. The vaccines, hence, would at least prevent 70% of the HPV.
Vaccine can cause the generation of protective antibodies level against the infection of HPV and the World Health Organization (WHO) revels that neutralizing antibodies are the most likely mediator for protection against HPV infection.

3 doses injected with 6 months would lead to the greatest protection.
The cervical cancer vaccine would be injected in females as young as 9 to 10 years old. Having vaccination at this early age allows for greater protection against cervical cancer.
Even through women are sexually active , the vaccine are still effective to those women.
